We know that Covid affected us all in so many ways. For hair and healthcare professionals it’s a common talking point today that Covid has had a significant impact on the health of many clients and patients, and on themselves as well.

Take hairdresser Connie Graham, who’s recently completed TrichoCare Edcation’s regulated Level 4 Certificate in Trichology. Connie runs her own salon in the heart of the popular Scottish town of Falkirk (which was once voted the most beautiful town in Scotland!). Connie’s been in the business as a hairdresser and assessor for over twenty years. She trained at the Stirling salon of the prestigious Rainbow Room International and has had her own salon for 15 years, offering a wide range of services to her many loyal clients.

”Post-Covid we started to see more and more of our clients complaining of hair loss. And it was happening to me and my team as well”, she tells us. “There seemed to be no pattern to it – different demographics, vaccinated or not vaccinated, it was happening across the board.”

Professional experience

Connie’s professional curiosity kicked in and she wanted to find out more about what was happening and why. “By a process of elimination, I wondered if it could be Covid-related but couldn’t be sure. So I went to my own doctor, but I think because of my training and experience in the business I knew more about hair issues than they did.”

So she looked elsewhere for more insight and sought out advice from her old training ground, Rainbow Room. “I knew that Wil Fleeson, who’s a director there, had studied trichology and is running his own trichology business, and so I asked hm how I could learn more about the causes of hair loss. And he recommended TrichoCare Education.”

Intrigued, Connie looked at TrichoCare’s website, talked to the TrichoCare team about course content and signed up for the Level 4 Certificate. “The subject matter looked very comprehensive, the course is regulated so I knew the quality was guaranteed, and I could learn online and pay in instalments, which was very convenient.”

Meeting other practitioners

So what was studying like for Connie? “I actually found it really enjoyable. The client consultation sessions were easy, because that’s what I do everyday. But, of course there were some areas that were a bit more challenging, like the chemistry. But I had great support from the TrichoCare team, there’s a learner WhatsApp group, and there were also interesting meetings where you could network and meet other practitioners like nutritionists and dermatologists.”

Now that she’s qualified, how does Connie intend putting her new knowledge and skills into practice? “I’m going to start a trichology consultation business here in Falkirk, separate from the hairdressing salon. I know the need is there, and so I’ll be putting out the word to my clients, via social media and my many contacts in the area to let them know my plans. I’m

really excited about the opportunity that completing the course successfully is giving me to build a new business.”

Connie’s recent successful qualification means hers is another name added to the long list of TrichCare Education graduates providing much needed advice and support, both nationally and internationally, to clients with hair and scalp problems. So what’s her advice to anyone thinking of following in her footsteps? “It’s always great to add to your knowledge and skills. TrichoCare’s Level 4 is an excellent course, but remember you do have to devote the time and effort to succeed. Personally, I think it’s absolutely worthwhile. Just do it!”
