How Hairdresser Karen Haslett Built Her Trichology Knowledge, Course by Course

If you’d like to know what studying with TrichoCare Education is like, ask hairdresser Karen Haslett. She’s already studied 3 of our courses, the most recent being the regulated Level 4 Certificate in Trichology. And she’s planning to add a fourth in the future! “The courses are easy to access, informative, thorough and give you in-depth understanding of the science behind hair and scalp conditions,” she says.

Karen is a highly experienced hairdresser and colour specialist. She’s worked in many salons, been a salon manager and is now a highly valued member of the team at well-known salon Lulu Blonde in south-west London. She’s completed the prestigious L’Oréal colour degree and also the equivalent colour specialist qualification from French brand La Biosthétique. “I’ve always been into education throughout my career, wanting to learn more, never being satisfied to stay still in my knowledge and understanding of hair, colour and the latest techniques and products,” Karen tells us.

From Colour Specialist to Trichology Student

So how did she progress from being a colour expert to choosing to study trichology? “Naturally, over the years behind the chair, you see lots of clients with hair and scalp problems. You’re sympathetic, of course, but in the end, as a hairdresser, there’s nothing you can say that you’re sure will be a solution.” And Karen says the problem is getting more challenging. “More and more people are talking about hair loss. And there’s so much in the news, online and in socials – all about miracle gels, serums, special shampoos – and clients are searching for advice they can really trust.”

Karen had been aware of trichology for some time, then after reading an article about trichology education, she started to research the subject and began to think this was something that could be for her. She looked at different courses and chose TrichoCare Education. “I saw I could study online, in my own time. The time commitment wasn’t too great and the cost was reasonable too.”

Progressing to the Level 4 Certificate in Trichology

Karen began her trichology journey with our ‘Introduction to Trichology Course’ to get a good grounding in the subject. Then she progressed to the ‘Conditions of the Hair and Scalp’ course which covers typical hair loss conditions such as female and male hair pattern loss, as well as nutrition and digestive issues. This standalone course is actually one part of the ITEC accredited Level 4 Certificate, so moving on to the Level 4 was another natural progression for Karen.

“I’d really enjoyed the shorter courses, and I decided I was ready for the full course, even though I knew it would be a bigger commitment. And it was certainly a bit daunting at first. But once I’d established a studying schedule that suited me – and didn’t eat into my ‘me-time’ – I was fine.”

All learners on the Level 4 course have the support of our Student Care team who are on hand to lend advice and encouragement. “My mentor Gina was very helpful, hosting group chats with other learners, and Keith the Course Director was brilliant in keeping in touch and providing helpful feedback on my assignments,” Karen confirms.

What’s Next for Karen?

So what next, now that Karen has successfully completed the course? “I’m still planning exactly how I’m going to use my new qualification in the future, but I’m definitely going to keep on learning as well. My next goal is to take TrichoCare’s Level 5 Advanced Certificate in Trichology.”

Karen is certainly a committed TrichoCare learner. What’s her advice for anyone thinking of following in her footsteps? “I would certainly recommend the courses I’ve taken. If you’re new to trichology, start with the ‘Introduction’ course and carry on from there, like I did. You do need to be committed, and well organised, but there’s huge satisfaction in gaining in-depth knowledge and understanding of such an important and topical issue.”
