Case Study: Charmaine Haughton – London

Charmaine Haughton is a highly experienced salon owner from South London. Not only is she a fully trained hairdresser, but Charmaine also has a PGCE teaching qualification and a Masters in Education. She divides her time between her salon and working part-time as a technical trainer for L’Oréal. Her diverse career also includes trichology training for hair professionals. This enhances her expertise and ability to educate others in the field of trichology training for hair professionals.

Charmaine’s hair and beauty salon is called Neferiti, after the beautiful Queen of ancient Egypt. But Charmaine couldn’t be more modern in her ambition to succeed through enhancing and diversifying her skills.

She’s currently studying TrichoCare Education’s Level 4 Certificate in Trichology. It is a one-year ITEC approved course that takes an in-depth look at the science of the hair and the scalp. This trichology training for hair professionals is pivotal in expanding her knowledge base.

What was your motivation?

“I was looking for a way to learn more about what happens when we work with hair and about the products we use”, she says. “Then I saw this course on the Habia website and I thought ‘That’s for me!’”

“I love hairdressing and making my clients look good, but I do think the skills we have as hairdressers can be quite limited. I wanted to know more so I could be more confident in advising my clients about their hair problems. This is why I was interested in trichology.” Trichology training for hair professionals allows for a deeper understanding of hair issues.

“I’ve learnt a lot on the Course, and I’m using what I’m learning all the time. For instance, clients who are having problems with hair loss really appreciate being able to talk to someone who can ask the right questions and reassure them.”

What will be the next step?

“When I complete the trichology qualification, my ambition is to open a separate business specialising in offering discreet consultations to clients with hair problems.”

Charmaine is studying TrichoCare’s full trichology course. The course is now accredited as the ITEC Level 4 Certificate in Trichology. The Course enables students to gain the practical and theoretical skills. These skills allow them to provide effective hair and scalp advice and services. It can be studied at selected FE Colleges or by distance learning. The programme includes lectures, guided learning sessions, clinical observation and written assessment and examination.

Study for the Certificate includes detailed examination of the science of hair and scalp conditions. An in-depth study of the chemicals used in hair treatments is also covered. It explains why these chemicals can cause concern. Furthermore, it covers occupational hazards and how to best advise clients on a healthy lifestyle. When they’ve successfully completed the Course, students are registered as a Trichologist with TrichoCare Education. They can then establish their own trichology practice.
