TrichoCare co-signs state registration proposals
Members of the Hair and Barber Council and the British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology, along with co-signatories, are campaigning for mandatory registration of hairdressers, barbers and beauty professionals in the UK. We believe this is vital in improving the standards of this world-leading industry. It generates £6.6 billion in turnover each year to the UK economy and employs up to 337,687 people.
Crucially, mandatory registration will also better protect the consumer. This is because it will mitigate the public risk arising from the purchase and sale of potentially dangerous chemicals. Overall, mandatory registration will additionally help to ensure the long-term sustainability of small businesses across the UK. These are a staple in local high street in all areas of the country.
Do consumer’s support this?
Industry’s overwhelming support for mandatory registration is shared by consumers and the general public too. The following survey findings illustrates the strength of feeling:
94% agreed there should be mandatory state registration of hairdressers and barbers.
74% stated that a practising hairdresser or barber should have a ‘licence’ which proves they have the necessary qualifications. This is to be able to carry out any hair/barber service.
70% of respondents would be concerned from a health and safety point of view. This concern arises if their hairdresser or barber was not properly trained and qualified.
Over 82% respondents believe there should be mandatory regulation within the beauty sector. This is to prove that therapists have the necessary qualifications.
Over 87% of people surveyed believe that beauty therapists should be trained and qualified. This is in order to practice in the UK.
