Introduction to Trichology

The Introduction Course is a distance learning course over 32 hours for those with appropriate experience in hairdressing. Learn about the structure of hair and skin, the ways that the chemicals in hair and beauty products can penetrate the skin, and the problems that can cause worrying problems for clients.

Topics in this course are relevant to you and your job. You can learn at home, and at your own pace. At the end of the Course, successful students will be well equipped to offer knowledgeable and confident advice to their clients.

Course Duration

32 hours

The course duration is flexible. The course literature provides guidelines for suggested hours dedicated to study, but these are flexible – students will be able to study and complete assignments in their own time.

Course Location

Distance learning plus optional lectures

Much of the learning is done through online and email communication. Course notes will be provided and students can study and respond to assignment questions at home. However, key aspects of the course will be delivered at TrichoCare or at participating FE Colleges. These lectures are organised as:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Trichology  1
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Trichology  2
  • The scalp and hair: pathologies and Clinical Practice 1
  • Clinical practice 2

The course is divided into five units:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Trichologists
  • The Role of Nutrition in Trichology
  • Provide a Trichology Service
  • Controlling Risk in Trichology Practice
  • Chemistry of hair and beauty products

Accreditation and Endorsement

This course is fully endorsed by the National Hairdressers’ Federation (NHF) the Association of Registered Trichologists.

Course Benefits

The Introduction to Trichology Course gives students an overview of the fundamentals of trichology, including the structure of hair and skin, conditions of the hair and scalp, and the nature of the chemicals used in hair products.


Support and guidance

At each stage, students will produce written assignments. These can be submitted online and viewed by the assessor. Full support, guidance and feedback will be provided on all work produced.

All course notes and guidance information are supplied on registration. Students will also receive support and further guidance throughout the course.

Although underlying clinical principles are learned, clinical assessment is not applicable to this course.

Course pricing

The Introduction to Trichology Course costs £530 + VAT. The cost of the course will be credited against the Level 4 Certificate in Trichology.


Where to go from here

On successful completion, the candidate is awarded the Introduction to Trichology Certificate and will be invited to study the Level 4 Certificate in Trichology. This is intended to provide a progression route to official recognition as a registered Trichologist.
